Grid Girls geared for disaster

September 25th, 2008

I’m asking for trouble posting this on my blog, but seriously, I needed to bring this up for debate.

Are these girls a representation of Singapore’s brains and beauty? I just find it quite embarrassing. I understand we don’t have large pool to choose from, but I just don’t believe there aren’t better girls out there? The calibre of girls in the line up is far below my expectations of what an F1 grid girl should be! Look at the other Grand Prix around the world (ok maybe not malaysia).

Forgive me if I’m wrong, who knows maybe some of these girls are masters or degree holders, and i apologise if you’re friends with anyone there, but these videos are pretty bad.

The producer of these videos should be on the firing line as well. They look so amateur, most of the girls clearly looked like they were unprepared are over-prepared.
Click here to watch their videos

I’m not expecting supermodels, but at least girls who are articulate.

    its so poorly produced.

oh well, not much is expected of them actually.

technically, they are just flag bearers and to ‘glam’ up the sport. hooters girls should have pre-requisite.

cheeeh. thought you were gonna say sumthing horrid. haHaha!! but the girls are an accurate cross section of young singaporean women innit?

i reckon they shud just keep their mouths shut. fast cars and fast chicks. eye candy. period. you wanna impress the socks off the boys…. talk fuel injection, brake pads & all (like how you & your krew talk about MTB parts??). haHaha!!

I totally agree with you! I went through each one individually.

I’ll help you hold up the virtual shield .. all the way from Perth. :)

The better girls normally wouldn’t want to come for these auditions. So as a producer, we already have slim pickings.

    @l: no thanks :)

guerilla: I think its very attractive for a girl to know about cars and its parts…

Joan: You know, you’re right. there may be alot of girls signing up, but trying to get the “quality” submissions is hard. That i must say must be quite a nightmare for a producer.

yeaah. my point exactly. especially for sumthing as specifik as the F1 event. you kant sell speed if you dunno wat you’re on about hey? i saw fotos of the sepang super GT girls. fwaar. pales in komparison (though the singapore reprezentatives look more like “drag queens” than racy ones).

Maybe they should import some other asian girls who more experienced with works like these to mix so our girls can learn from it and then pass it on.

I agreed with you. I just cannot find any X factor from any of the Grid girls….and nothing attractive enough for me to tune in to watch the SingTel Grid Girls episode on TV5.

jo: i watched the first episode, and that was painful enough.

what do we aspect, PHD holders grid girls.
not that anyone s gonna test their smart or so. I ve never come across any grand prix where they interview these girls…just to add some feminity to the race !!!! no harm

OMG. i have the same sentiments. i live overseas and when all the f1 hulabaloo i went to check out all the grid girl video blogs and they made me cringe. i mean, overall, they all seem like nice girls with nice personalities but they did NOT come off well in the videos, where some of them even looked like they were reading prompters in the background. very forced. aiyoh… they should have had a few of them chatting together or something to have them feel more natural.

Sotong girl, Maha Maran said she cycle… Take her to jump 5foot ramp… Hahaha!!

sjghouse: if that’s the case, they shouldn’t put the videos of the online. Just ask them to look pretty and do their job as a grid girl. Because by exposing them to the public in that manner, you’re opening them up to criticism, by me and the rest of the world. You’re right, if they are there to add feminity, then is should have been just that :) yeah?

    Tan: bring it on.

Come on. The only reason why they re overly scrutinized and criticized is becos the S’pore GP is the only GP that has an event showcasing ‘gridgirls’in this manner.
There shouldn’t even be a segment on them.
Unfortunately it tells you the type of viewership we have to provide for here.

Lookswise, they re pretty much there for Asian chicks.

i see it more of a fault on the producer’s part. they flippantly chosed the poor ‘hopeful’ girls, gave them horrid (less than grid girl-like) uniforms, terrible grooming (make-up & hair) and CHEAPSKATE and worse-than-crap publicity (moblog videos, channel 5 tv show) etc..

the girls are doing their best.. how could you blame them? do you think they were really having a good time feeling less than they should be? im sure they are aware of how ‘traditional’ grid girls are supposed to be like, but did they have a voice in organisational matters? i’d think not. Moreover, they wldnt’ve did the ‘dirty work’ if they knew they were going to face such harsh criticisms..

so give the singtel grid girls a break and perhaps turn your attention to the very people who caused the horrid experience..

adrenalin: Veryy valid points!!! i’m sure alot of them were not prepared to be portrayed that way. But i still think most of them are not up to par. Bad producer or not, he/she can’t take full blame.

The uniforms weren’t very flattering either doncha think?
