How to keep your coffee hot

March 30th, 2009

Clearing my drafts, here’s one I wrote awhile back on ways to keep your coffee hot.

There’s nothing worse than having a luke-warm or cold coffee on your pallet. It makes no difference that we enjoy the warmer climate, my office still feels like a fridge from 9-6 everyday.

So what can we do to keep our coffee warm?

I tried using the insulated mug from coffeebean, but it doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. My hot drinks takes less than an hour to go lukewarm.

It would be a hassle, but maybe using a thermal mug will keep the coffee warm longest. When I’m ready to drink some, pour it out in portions.

After I tweeted my frustration, a reader sent me this link to a USB coffee warmer.

The unit plugs into any USB port of the computer or powered laptop and runs off the standard 5VDC feed of the port and uses only 2.5watts of power.

Features:
* Hotplate heating temperature of 80 to 110 Degrees
* Quick Heatup Cycle of 5 to 8 minutes
* Includes an on/off switch and an indicator light to show its working.
* Full 2 year warranty and guarantee
* NEW – Includes Stainless Steel Cup and Cap

Ideal for warming ceramic cups, metal cups and properly rated glass cups.

Anyone have one of these? And do they really work? Does it “burn” your coffee after awhile?

My friend bought one of this at those novelty store. DOESN’T DO ANYTHING!!! The base of the cup/mug is too thick for the only 2.5watts of power to do anything. From what i know, even if u put your finger there, it only feels a little warm, what’s more your office feels like a fridge.

But the one you have there seem to be good quality, but i still have my reservation.

Hi there, have been reading your blog on and off. Am glad you’re back on it. :)
I reviewed this before when I was working for a magazine. The review was rather simple: It doesn’t do jack shit. So don’t waste your money! I think thermal flasks still do a way better job.

I had the mains version back in California. ‘Think I paid US$14. It’s really useful, but a ceramic cup is better as it doesn’t “burn” the coffee that badly. If you drink your coffee black (i.e. no cream / milk), it will work better as there’s no milk to “cook.” Over time though, the heating plate will inevitably get coffee drips on it and it will smell like a 7-11 coffee station (unless you regularly clean it). I consider it so essential that I bought a backup. :-P

Consume coffee fresh. Use the excuse to get away from work and get another cup.

It is probably not a good idea to plug in things that are not necessary in the USB port. have heard / seen enough stories of cheap devices short circuiting and frying the pc in the process.
