The story behind the house

December 30th, 2010 No comments

Us moving house meant a huge garage sale was in order. The attic was cleared of all it’s treasures. Some were packed up in boxes to be moved to the new place, and some were reluctantly priced by my hoard-er of a mum.

It was pretty easy to price things, until we came across the Barbie Doll house.

Barbie Doll House

I know it doesn’t look exactly like the pink barbie doll house you’d expect, probably because my sister gave it a fresh coat of paint some years back, and tits furniture isn’t in place. To anyone, it’s just a barbie doll house, but to us it’s the story of how we came to acquire the house which brings us to tears.

My mum is an Artist by qualification, attaining her degree in fabric design in England. There’s where she met my dad. Fast forward maybe around 8 years and they are living in Singapore with 2 daughters.

She moved to Singapore with my dad for his job, renting the house in Holland Road that we went on to stay in for the next 30 years. It was a struggle financially with rent and expenses for 4 of us. Mummy was kept preoccupied with us two little devils, but felt the need to contribute to the household expenses, that’s when she started her own business in Fabric design and manufacturing Children’s Playbook.

Few years later, she started teaching Children’s Art Classes which grew into a thriving business for the next 25 years! Linda Gray Art Classes. She was and IS a SuperMom!

But it wasn’t just to help with the expenses, but also for herself, to be reminded of her self-worth and her valued contributions to building a home.

Back to the Barbie Doll House.

Why it means so much to us is because this was the very first thing my mum bought for me and Jie Jie with her very FIRST pay cheque.

The barbie doll house sure wasn’t cheap back then, but the joy in her heart and on our faces were priceless.

We Love you Mummy!

[Japan] Blue and Black runs

December 29th, 2010 Comments off

Back to the Japan Niseko posts, by the third day, we were feeling more confident and decided to venture higher up the peak.
Snowboarding in Niseko
Morning ritual: I’d be the first one to get out of bed. So I’ll sneak out quietly to wash up without waking drea, and prepare some brekkie and hot water for the rest. I make myself a hot cup of coffee and that’s when the rest of the chalet starts to stir.

Over the kitchen island, Chris and Mich will start planning the day’s routes and runs.

Soon we all start to get ready and gear up, and make the long trek up to the ski lifts. And for the rest of the day till dark, we’re on the boards or on our bums.

Snowboarding in Niseko

But I must admit, was really proud of first-timers Kimmy, Drea and myself for tackling the blue and black runs. And we had blue and black bruised bums to prove it. Even if we were doing the “Falling Leaf” most of the way down, at least we gave it a solid attempt to stay up!

I really really enjoyed snowboarding, and hope I’m able to do it again sometime soon. Korea? China? Kashmir? Canada?

Crayola 8 and 64

Sometimes, all you need is someone to articulate what’s in your head. And this does it for me.

“Life is like a box of crayons. Most people are the 8-color boxes, but what you’re really looking for are the 64-color boxes with the sharpeners on the back. I fancy myself to be a 64-color box, though I’ve got a few missing. It’s ok though, because I’ve got some more vibrant colors like periwinkle at my disposal. I have a bit of a problem though in that I can only meet the 8-color boxes. Does anyone else have that problem? I mean there are so many different colors of life, of feeling, of articulation.. so when I meet someone who’s an 8-color type.. I’m like, “hey girl, magenta!” and she’s like, “oh, you mean purple!” and she goes off on her purple thing, and I’m like, “no – I want magenta!”” – JM

Where are all the 64-colour boxes! Where are the Magentas!

Baby names for #2

December 10th, 2010 1 comment

2 years back I did a fun little poll on when Julian’s birth date was. Let’s do something different for now. BABY NAMES!

Jie Jie and Kevin are debating all sorts of names for baby #2 due in February. Irish, Jewish, unusual, common, long, short.

The ones I liked were: Liam, Benjamin, Jamie, Jared, Oliver.

Here’s the poll with our choices narrowed down. Choose your favourite from our list, or you can suggest one as well.

Things to note when suggesting a name:

  • Do note his surname would be Wong. So make sure it sounds right, if not the poor kid is going to be made fun of in school later on. Example: No names such as Magic!
  • Because it’s a one syllable surname, one syllable first names don’t sound as nice.
  • Please don’t try to be different by spelling names differently like Benjamynn, Jaredh, or anything fancy. Keep it simple.
  • No geek names like alphonsus, theodore, alfafa (no offence)
  • Please no silly names like Batman.

A British study of 3,000 parents released in May suggests one-in-five parents regret the name they chose for a child, many of whom were distressed over the unusual or oddly spelled names they’d chosen.

New Online Resource for the wanderlust

December 5th, 2010 Comments off

Was invited to a blogger’s event this week by BBC.com for the launch of their new travel site in partnership with its sister company Lonely Planet.

BBC Event

It was an intimate dinner with just 5 bloggers, Dunbar Jones and the BBC folks at South bridge Jazz@7ATENINE. A great sharing session on technology, website user experience and behaviour, travel stories and us locals throwing a slew of recommendations to David on things to do in Singapore.

BBC.com today launched its new travel site in partnership with its sister company Lonely Planet.

BBC.com/travel is led by Editorial Director, David G. Allan, formerly NYTimes.com Travel & Styles Editor. BBC.com, already attracting blue chip advertisers and 16m unique users, has secured Emirates as the key sponsor of the travel section.

At launch, the site has a range of stories from top destinations including Italy, the Caribbean and New York City. Coming soon are a series of specially commissioned stories from BBC contributors and Lonely Planet authors such as the Edinburgh Festival, Japan’s twist on Fall foliage and life above the Arctic Circle.

David G. Allan says: “Our audience already loves the smart, sophisticated and well researched stories from the BBC. BBC Travel builds on our news and documentary heritage with outstanding travel journalism, and key insights from Lonely Planet’s authors, to inspire you to leave your desk and have an adventure whatever the destination.”

BBC Travel is going to be huge! I had no idea they owned a big stake in Lonely Planet. I’d recommend bookmarking this site and watch it grow and evolve into the monster its going to become. If you have any recommendations or feedback about the site, let me know and I’ll be sure to pass on the note to them.

[Shanghai] Monkey Bar / Lounge

December 4th, 2010 Comments off

Final post for Shanghai is about my last night there. After all the press activities circulating the HSBC-Men’s Champions, I wanted to have 1 night out to experience the Shanghai nightlife.

Adrian was spinning at Monkey Lounge/Bar so he asked me to drop by and check it out. Another friend forewarned that the crowd is quite ABC, but is was worth a visit nonetheless. He gave me the address and also mentioned that it’s a bit hard to find. And Good luck!

Monkey Bar was introduced as a “secret” bar, just because it’s so hard to find and hidden in some dark alley with no signage. That must have been such a great marketing ploy, because the whole elusiveness just made you want to try hunt it down. And that, I did.

Monkey Bar

I hopped into the cab and got dropped off on Donghu Lu, and I must have walked up and down that stretch 3 times. So much for blending in, you might as well stamped a ‘LOST’ across my forehead. Finally I succumbed, and asked a group of girls where this elusive Monkey lounge was. They pointed towards a dark alley and said I’d had to walk further in to find the main door.

The only indication you have that you’re at the right place is by the black door with a cryptic etched-print of a monkey-philosopher.

As you pass the heavy velvet curtains and Roman columns, the room suddenly opens up to a high ceiling, lush warm and cozy lounge. Monkey lounge isn’t catering to the beer drinking frat boys, the crowd were well-dressed and sipped delicious but expensive cocktails. They either popped champagne as easily as opening a can of soda, or swirled their glasses of premium whiskies pretending that actually like that throat-burning shit. It was a tad pretentious to be honest.

But oh since I was here, “Excuse me, can I have a Lavender 75 please!” which was a cocktail which consists of Bombay sapphire, prosecco, fresh lemon and lavender syrup.

Feeling a bit hungry? You can order small plates of “atas” food like caviar, foie gras terrine or crispy frog legs. Or if you want to be a bit more adventurous, go outside to the roadside yakitori stall and sit on the tiny stools by the side of the road. If I were you, choose the vegetables, you never know what kind of meat they are skewering there :) .

Monkey Bar

Next stop, an underground club called Shelter and back to my hotel. Got back just in time to pack my bags and leave for the airport. Goodbye Shanghai!

[Shanghai] Qiao Xiang Yuan 俏湘园

December 1st, 2010 Comments off

I met Andrew and Alvina for lunch one afternoon, and they took me to a hu nan (I hope I got it right) restaurant, walking distance from their office.

俏湘园 (qiào xiāng yuán) was a little restaurant with big flavours. Lots of the dishes we ordered were spicy with a think layer of chilli oil.

Qiao Xiang Yuan

What we ordered:
飘香鱼片
外婆菜夹饼
芥菜烩山药
口水鸡

王老吉

Qiao Xiang Yuan

All in all, we only paid approximately S$30 for all that good food. It’s embarrassingly cheap.
