Buying trekking/hiking socks & gloves

Besides buying a good pair of trekking shoes,I would suggest you invest in a good pair of socks. Don’t overlook this because it’s crucial to comfort and injury protection. You COULD buy the $1 cotton pasar malam ones, but don’t say I didn’t warn you, if you’re lucky they won’t give you blisters or bunch up in your shoe.

SOCKS

Here’s a quick guide to buying the right type of socks.

Sock Weight

Depending on your use, you need to choose a sock based on its sock weight. Socks designed for walking will have light or even no padding. If you’re trekking, opt for a medium or heavy. Knowing a little about your bio-mechanics will also make a difference in fit and comfort. If you land on your heels a lot, then opt for padding in key areas – heel, ball of foot, toes and instep.

More sock weight = more cushioning

Double layer socks?

Some people opt for double layer socks to prevent blisters as it provides wicking and decreasing friction. How this works is that the sock layers move against each other rather than the foot against the sock.

Wicking is when an inner layer draws the sweat away from the skin to the next layers, which makes the wearer feel warmer and more comfortable, and thus the some materials are called wicking materials. When moisture has moved from the skin into (non-absorbent) clothing, it has more surface area and will evaporate faster.

Material

Quality hiking socks are often a blend of natural and synthetic materials, with the key characteristic of wicking moisture away from feet. Look for wicking fabrics such as CoolMax, Dri-Fit, Sorbtek and similar.

Cotton is a no no! Cotton absorbs moisture and excessive moisture leads to cold feet in cold weather. Cotton also increases friction to your skin leading to blisters.

Travel Tip: Buy different coloured socks so you can distinguish clean from dirty.

I went ahead and bought 2 pairs of good ones, just in case. Verdict, snug and kept my toes warm. But I can’t say the same for the gloves I bought. Went to all the shops at Novena Velocity looking for a suitable pair of gloves, but they were all so bulky or too tight for my long fingers.

GLOVES

Here’s a quick guide on buying a pair of gloves for your next trip.

Think of gloves just like how you’d dress for winter weather: 3 layers – waterproof outer shell, insulation layer and inner liner.

For outdoor winter activities

Go for one with all 3 layers and for extreme cold situations, consider mittens or lobster mittens.

For mild winters

Choose a polyester, spandex, or fleece which will offer warmth plus dexterity. Consider one with an outer layer which is adds the extra warmth and insulation.

*When trying gloves on, be sure the elastic at the wrist is snug but not tight, and the glove is long enough to go under or over your jackets’ cuffs.

Hiking socks and gloves

In the end I bought a Polartec stretch glove, but it really didn’t keep my fingers warm enough for Sikkim weather. But it was great at the warmer altitudes. You should really look for a glove that has the outer layer and wind protection.

Spend that little extra on the right socks and gloves. Your feet and fingers will thank you!

How to buy hiking or trekking shoes?

I’ve seen it too many times, the question about what type of shoes you should be wearing to go trekking or what did I use when I went to Nepal and Sikkim.

When I bought my first pair of hiking boots back in 1998, it was all leather, heavy and clunky. But we didn’t know any better, and it was recommended to us by the salesgirl at the shop.

I loved how they look, and my trusty boots have taken me trekking in the Himalayas Nepal in 1997 till 2009 through the mountains of Himachal Pradesh India. But alas, the shoes gave in on the last day of our trek, and with my Sikkim trip around the corner, I had to buy another pair.

Why you need to buy trekking boots

  • Traction
  • Ankle support
  • Water-proofing/resistance
  • Protect your toes
  • Better stability
  • Keep warm

Here are some guidelines which I’ve sourced from around the web and some of my personal recommendations about getting your boots:

Types of Boots

For mild, flat terrains  – offroad, dirt roads, bit rutty and rocky, but generally walkable

Go for lighter boots or trekking sneakers usually made of nylon or light leather. They are usually NOT waterproof, but the leather ones are likely to be water resistant. They don’t usually offer much ankle support.

For medium terrains – few hours of walking on uneven terrain, rocky paths, Nepal Annapurna trek, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim)

Look for boots with ankle support, a bit like Timberlands. They are a bit heavier, but most importantly you want to get those that wrap the ankle. This prevents you from twisting your ankles on uneven grounds.

For rough terrains

You are looking at heavy boots sometimes with steel toe caps, water-proof, gore-tex perhaps.

For mountaineering – Peak expeditions and ice hiking etc.

This is specially designed boots to take a lot of abuse and keep your feet warm, dry and protected. These are also made to allow for attachments of crampons. Unless you’re going ice hiking or climbing some serious mountain, you will not need these type of boots.

Tips on buying your shoes

  • Definitely try them with socks of different thickness. Most stores will have some on standby, but if you’re a germaphobe, bring your own.
  • If possible, try shoes in the evening when your feet tends to be slightly bigger than in the morning.
  • If you can, try the shoes on different terrain. For example in the outdoor adventure shop in Novena, there’s a little bridge with sample wood and
  • NEVER wear your shoes for the first time at the actual time of use, break your shoes in BEFORE your trip. Go hike Bukit Timah Nature Reserve or something.

Care for your shoes

  • Check the condition of your shoes before your trip
  • If you don’t use your shoes often, the rubber will harden and it’s going to break. So wear them once in awhile, or even better, a good excuse to travel more.
  • Cleaning and waterproofing

Where to buy trekking shoes in Singapore

There are lots of options at Novena Square here are a few specific shops that carry trekking shoes.

My final choice for trekking shoes was based on my future travels. Most of which would be medium to mild terrains. So I went with the Columbia.

Flu or Cold?

So do you have a flu or a cold? I googled this today just to understand it once and for all.

The cold and flu are both respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different types of viruses with different symptoms.

  • cold symptoms can make you feel bad for a few days
  • flu symptoms can make you feel quite ill for a few days to weeks. The flu can also result in serious health problems such as pneumonia and hospitalizations.

What are common cold symptoms?

  • usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two.
  • Nasal symptoms, runny nose, and congestion follow,
  • along with a cough by the fourth and fifth days.
  • Fever is uncommon in adults, but a slight fever is possible.
  • Children are more likely to have a fever with a cold.

Cold symptoms usually last for about a week. During the first three days that you have cold symptoms, you are contagious. This means you can pass the cold to others, so stay home and get some much-needed rest.

If cold symptoms do not seem to be improving after a week, you may have a bacterial infection, which means you may need antibiotics.

What are common flu symptoms?

Flu symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms and come on quickly.

  •  sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches and soreness, congestion, and cough.
  •  Swine flu in particular is also associated with vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Most flu symptoms gradually improve over two to five days, not uncommon to feel run down for a week or more.
  • A common complication of the flu is pneumonia
  •  If you notice shortness of breath, you should let your doctor know. Another common sign of pneumonia is fever that comes back after having been gone for a day or two.

Massive Attack – Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto)

Another beautifully haunting track by Massive Attack, lending vocals by Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star.

Paradise Circus

It’s unfortunate that when we feel a storm
we can roll ourselves over ’cause we’re uncomfortable
oh where the devil makes us sin
but we like it when we’re spinning in his grip.

Love is like a sin my love

For the one that feels it the most
Look at her with her eyes like a flame
She will love you like a fly will never love you, again

It’s unfortunate that when we feel a storm
we can roll ourselves over when we’re uncomfortable
oh well the devil makes us sin
but we like it when we’re spinning in his grip.

Love is like a sin my love

For the one that feels it the most
Look at her with a smile like a flame
She will love you like a fly will never love you, again

Heineken Sound Dome @ ZoukOut 2011

Totally Unplanned.

A few nights before the day, Hedirman, Danli, and I were chatting at South Coast MBS, realising that ZoukOut was this weekend! But our old bones were telling us to just stay home and watch a movie and crawl into bed by midnight. We all agreed that unless we were given tickets, we weren’t going.

So at midnight, I crawled into my bed and was reading an email sent that afternoon on my iPad. An email from the lovely people at iris Singapore and Heineken giving me tickets to ZoukOut and to their Heineken tent! #winning

So… I guess we were going!

Courtesy bag that iris sent! How thoughtful!

Floating balloon was just a floating balloon till I saw a woman strapped to it spinning and twirling so gracefully in the air!

You know you're getting old when you don't see that many familiar faces at ZoukOut. Another observation, LOTS of tourists from India and Indonesia this year.

Hello Stranger at the Heineken Sound Dome. Me, Man, and Danz.

The Heineken Sound Dome was great, there were Outdoor Aircon Units galore (Sorry K I couldn’t fit it in my handbag! I would have if i could?), a bar with NO queues, free bangers & mash potatoes in a cup, chairs, and a cool photo station which projects your photo on to the entire green dome.

We didn’t stay late, I had a wedding to attend to in the morning. But I still had a great time thanks to iris and Heineken!

Andre’s mismatch party

This event was awhile back, but I’d like to document it for the sake of my failing memory.

I think i’ve designed about 4 Party invites for Kim already, and this was one of them, Andre’s 11th Birthday party. The theme was mismatched attires, and I think the adults took it more seriously than the kids!

Andre's Birthday Invite

Day started off with all of Andre’s friends and us meeting at Golden Village to watch Transformers in Gold Class.

And after the movie, Kim chartered a bus to transfer everyone from the movies to the bowling alley for bowling, lots of sugar, custom t-shirts and a custom Ironman birthday cake. Andre has the best mum for planning everything to a tee.
